Final Floating city

Here is the video of the floating city rotating in the sky. The lighting has been made to look like natural sunlight. As the city rotates you can see the different textures and shapes of the buildings, also the demon hand clinging onto the slums. Some statistics are included using AfterEffects.

Information Booklet

Lorna and myself designed an information booklet that would be available for citizens when entering the city. It holds all the statistical information they need to know. For example the weather, activities available, housing options and pricing, transportation etc. Alot of these statistics are what we collected during our research. We have created different graphs to make is visually easier for to someone to read.

Infographic Poster

Philip and Rhea designed  a infograph that gives details on the new city. It also includes statistical information before and after the demon attack, such as population. It would also be used as an advertisement for anyone that wants to live in the city. It has different features that we have collected through our research on Kaunas city, such as the food, transportation and street artwork.

Final Concept

After looking at all our different concepts we have combined the final design together to create the final concept.

The city will be floating in the sky instead of under ground or space. We changed our original idea as we thought it was a little far fetched to have the city sucked through a vortex into space. Also if it was underground we would have problems with light source and living resources. It would be a more realistic idea if the city escapes the threat through flight. We still want it to be a little ‘out there’ so we will be keeping the demon hand.

The story to this concept is that the city had been built due to the demon attacking the world. The attack happened alot sooner than excepted and part of the city was rushed. The top of the city is more structured and modern whereas the bottom is squashed together and resembles slums.

Booklet Research

For the Data Visualisation side of things we wanted to have a booklet. This would be like an information booklet for the citizens who want to move to the floating city.

I looked at a few different types of booklets that show data. They all seem to follow the same concept with more graphical information and less writing. This is more appealing for a reader when looking at the book. They just want to know the information quickly and easily. Colour scheme is also part of the appeal and easier for the eye to catch  the most important information.

Composition is also important when creating a booklet and I had a look at the different layouts. We also had to decide what type of booklet it will be. How many pages? Would it be a booklet or more like a flyer or leaflet?

Demon hand

During our lectures we had been given the task to create a hand using a step by step guide. This was just before creating our demon hand so we decided to use this. Philip had added features on his hand to make it more resemble the demon, like curved fingers and long pointed nails. The hand also had only 3 fingers which give it a creature feel.

After the hand was modelled he added a rig. This was so that when we put the hand in with the city we could move the fingers to look like it was grasping the buildings. The back story to this is a monster almost caught them during their escape into the sky, but failed and lost its hand.

Slums research

Nina Lindgren had created this piece of artwork completely from cardboard. We really liked the design for this for our floating city. The bottom part of the city we wanted it to resemble slums. The back story to our city is that it was rushed at the end to get the city into the city, so the bottom was squashed and hurried together, trying to get as much housing as possible.

In the movie fast and Furious the characters are in Brazil. At one point they are getting chased by the military and are having to escape through the slums. The houses are so close together that they can easily jump from roof to roof. The houses are all shapes and sizes.

Chong Feigiap is an artist that has created some great pieces of work involving stacked housing and cities. I love the colours and the design of each house. Its very similar to slums and would hold alot of people.

Davide Magliacano is another artist that created imaginative floating cities. They have the same squashed, stacked look that we are inspired to use.

Update

This image is the first attempt of the slums that Rhea had created. We had decided that this was a little too much and have less. During our Feedback Conann pointed out that this should have been used and it would improve our risk taking.

Modelling

So this was my very first time modelling something in Maya and I have to be honest, I had no clue what I was doing. Although we had lectures I still needed watch tutorials and try to learn my way around maya. The video below was one of the videos I looked at. It was very basic and helped me to learn the menus and keys and how to model a shape.

The top part of the city would be for the ‘elite’ and rich, so I wanted to bring in the Kaunas castle in the design of this. The castle has a red brick colour scheme. I liked the cone shape roof that is characteristic for the castle. I experimented with different designs for the top and keep the similar structure to the castle

The very first time I went onto Maya I was literally just learning as I went along and the first thing I came up with was terrible. Learning the different ways of breaking up and moving the polygons was the first challenge. From there I had to start trying to get them in some sort of shape. I won’t lie, I was sort of moving things about and occidentally doing something that I thought looked good. I wanted to bring in the gothic design and added spikes and castle like walls around the building. The image at the bottom right was the final design that we went with.

Concepts

The concept below is one that I created showing the Floating city inside the earth/ Meteorite. Holes/ skylights have been made on the walls to let the light of the sun in. The hand from the demon attack is still outstretched towards the city.

city concept

Here is another concept that I did from a different angle. It is showing the city in better detail. I have kept the architecture of some of the Kaunas building, such as the Kaunas castle and the cathedral. The light from the skylights are shinning down onto the city.

concept 2

Here is another concept I did following the story concept of the monster attack. Its clawed hand his smashing through the walls of the city. I added blood on the ground cause I like being dramatic.

demon hand

The following two concepts were created by Rhea. She is showing the inside of the dome/ earth in different angles. In this concept they have been living in it for a long time, and moss and vegetation has began to grow. The demon had is solid and fossilised, and they have build and lived around it.

The concept below was created by Lorna. She has shown the outside of the meteorite in space. This is a skylight shining in to the city inside.

This next concept was also created by lorna. She has added detail in the village showing the Kaunas architecture and some of their landmarks.

Lorna has created another concept showing what some of the streets would look like within the city. It has kept the tall, close together building that we have seen in the real Kaunas city.
